Who is Allah?

Understanding who Allah is forms the foundation of Islamic belief. In simple terms, Allah is the One and Only God—the Creator and Sustainer of everything in existence. Here’s a closer look at His nature and our relationship with Him:

The Oneness of Allah

At the heart of Islam is the belief in Tawheed, the absolute oneness of Allah. This means there is no god but Allah, and nothing in creation can be compared to Him. The Qur’an emphasizes this concept:

“Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'”
Qur’an 112:1-4

This declaration reinforces that Allah is unique and unparalleled.

Allah as the Creator and Sustainer

Allah is the originator of the universe. He not only created the heavens, the earth, and everything in between but also continuously sustains all life. Every existence is a sign of His creative power and constant care. The Qur’an beautifully describes His role:

“Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.”
Qur’an 2:255

This verse, known as Ayat al-Kursi, reminds us that all power and life come from Allah.

Allah’s Beautiful Attributes

Allah is described in the Qur’an with many attributes that reflect His perfection. He is merciful, compassionate, all-knowing, and all-powerful. His mercy is one of the most emphasized qualities, offering comfort and hope to believers. In every challenge and blessing, His attributes guide and support us.

Our Relationship with Allah

In Islam, developing a personal relationship with Allah is essential. Through acts of worship like prayer (Salah), supplication (Dua), and reflection on His words in the Qur’an, Muslims nurture this connection. Believers are encouraged to seek His guidance in every aspect of life, knowing that He is always present and aware.

By understanding these core aspects—Allah’s oneness, His role as Creator and Sustainer, His beautiful attributes, and our intimate relationship with Him—we gain a clearer picture of who Allah is and why He is central to the life of every Muslim.
